The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) includes Sorbitol on the list of direct food substances affirmed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). Sorbitol may also be used as an ingredient in Over-The-Counter (OTC) drug laxative products.

The safety of Sorbitol as been assessed by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. The review concluded that it was not necessary to limit the dietary intake of Sorbitol and related sugars.
