Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile

What Is It?

Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile is an off-white-to-light-tan crystalline powder used in a wide variety of cosmetics and personal care products.

Why Is It Used?

Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile prevents or slows bacterial growth, thereby protecting cosmetic products from spoilage.

Scientific Facts

Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile is a bromine containing compound that is used at very low concentrations in cosmetics products. It functions to prevent the growth of potentially harmful microorganisms (germs).

Safety Information

The safety of Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile has been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The CIR Expert Panel evaluated the scientific data and concluded that Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile was safe as used in rinse-off products and safe with limitations in leave-on products.

CIR Safety Review: The CIR Expert Panel acknowledged that Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile is readily absorbed through the skin. However, as the ingredient is neither genotoxic nor a developmental toxicant, the extent of absorption was not a significant factor in the evaluation. Rather, the CIR Expert Panel was concerned about possible sensitization, and elected to set limits to address these concerns. The CIR Expert Panel noted that data from dermal toxicity testing supported the safety of 0.025%; there were no severe observable effects at this level.

Thus, a 0.025% limit was set for leave-on products. A safe as used conclusion was reached on for rinse-off products; based on current industry data, the CIR Expert Panel expects the concentration of use to be less than or equal to 0.06% in such products. Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile is not permitted for use as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products in the European Union.

More Scientific Information

Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile is the brominated form of methylene glutaronitrile used as a preservative in cosmetic formulations. Preservatives are ingredients that prevent or retard microbial growth and thus protect cosmetic products from spoilage. Some cosmetic products may support the growth of microorganisms.

The use of preservatives is required to prevent product damage caused by microorganisms and to protect the product from inadvertent contamination by the consumer during use.
